Everything the daily EUC commuter needs to know, from locking and charging at the office to waterproofing and dealing with hills.

Using an EUC as your daily commuter is one of the most satisfying decisions you can make. No parking, no traffic, no transit delays, just you, your wheel, and the road. Here's everything you need to know to make it work.

  1. Get a wheel with 2x your commute range: battery degrades, weather affects range, and you don't want anxiety about making it home.

  2. Bring a charging cable: most offices will let you charge at a desk. A full charge from flat takes 4-6 hours on most mid-range wheels.

  3. Waterproof your wheel: most EUCs have some water resistance but aren't fully waterproof. Conformal coat the control board if you live somewhere it rains regularly.

  4. Carry a portable lock: a good cable lock weighs almost nothing and stops casual theft when you step inside briefly.

  5. Learn to ride in rain before you need to: wet pavement changes stopping distances significantly. Practice before your commute depends on it.

  6. Map your route for hills: EUCs handle hills well but steep climbs drain battery fast. Know what you're commuting through.

  7. Have your backup plan: know the nearest bus/subway stop. Some days the weather, a flat, or a mechanical will beat you.

  8. Invest in proper lights: front and rear lights are essential for dawn/dusk riding. Most EUCs have built-in lights but a supplementary headlight helps significantly.

  9. Build your fitness gradually: riding an EUC looks effortless but your core and legs are constantly working. Don't do 20 miles your first week.

  10. Join the community: local EUC riding groups are the best source of route tips, gear advice, and riding buddies.
