EUC Protective Gear: What You Actually Need

The honest guide to protective gear: what's essential, what's optional, and why riding without a helmet is not an option at any skill level.

Electric unicycles are incredible machines, but they have one design characteristic you need to understand: if the wheel cuts out (from battery, overload, or firmware issue), you are going down, immediately, without warning, at whatever speed you were doing.

This isn't meant to scare you. It's meant to make sure you're protected.

Non-negotiable: The helmet

A full-face helmet is strongly recommended for any riding above 15 mph. At minimum, wear a quality bicycle helmet with wrist guards. The EUC community has a saying: ATGATT (All The Gear, All The Time).

Essential: Wrist guards

Your natural instinct is to put your hands out when falling. Without wrist guards, broken wrists are the most common EUC injury.

Highly recommended: Knee and elbow pads

Motorcycle-grade knee armour (D3O or similar) is worth the investment for any rider doing speed above 20 mph.

For advanced riders: Full motorcycle gear

Many high-speed EUC riders wear motorcycle jackets with built-in armour. At 40+ mph, you're moving at motorcycle speeds: dress accordingly.

Our top gear recommendations

  • Helmet: TSG Pass Full Face (purpose-built for EUC/PEV)
  • Wrist guards: Triple Eight Hired Hands or Pro-Tec
  • Knee pads: G-Form Pro-X2 or Leatt 3DF
  • Jacket: Any motorcycle jacket with CE Level 2 armour
